How to play — College Basketball

Forty and zero is a season no program has ever finished — the closest fell a single game short. The record runs from 1942 across more programs than any professional league here.

The board

5 seats: PG · SG · SF · PF · C. A starting five. With careers lasting three or four years, an era on this board is a specific group of players who happened to overlap, not a style a program kept for a decade.

The rounds

Each round opens one program in one window. That churn is the point: a decade genuinely changes who is available, and the same school can be unrecognisable two spins apart.

The season

34 games, then a 6-game playoff gauntlet at 30 wins40–0 for the sweep. Thirty-four games and then a six-game tournament — forty results. The tournament is single elimination against whoever is left, which is precisely how real unbeaten seasons have ended.

What the record holds

The record runs from 1942 across more programs than any professional league here, with 273 recognised figures. A career lasts three or four years, so the hall is narrower than the professional ones and an era on this board is a specific group of players who overlapped rather than a style a program held.

What decides it

Season-long honours survive a bad night in a way a tournament result never does, so Consensus All-American and the Wooden are the steadier read on how good a season actually was. A tournament seed is decided by a season and then ignored by a single night, which is why the board rewards a five that can win ugly as readily as one that can win pretty — thirty-four games build the record, six decide whether it meant anything.
